How to Rock Your Beautiful Textured Hair at the Gym

  1. Find a Protective Hairstyle That Works for You: Braids, cornrows and mini twists are my go-to protective hairstyles that work well for gym girlies.
  2. Use the Right Accessories: Whether you have long or short hair, the right accessories can make a huge difference. Consider breathable options like cotton scarves or face caps for managing scalp sweat. If dryness and breakage are concerns, satin scarves are a great alternative. Hair bands, scrunchies, and hair clips can help keep your hair away from your face and out of the way.
  3. Opt for Easy Styles: Styling your natural type 4 hair into a pineapple or bun is the easiest and my favourite way to minimize hair fuss during workouts.
  4. Post-Workout Hair Care: Apply a cleansing spritz or dry shampoo to your scalp after a workout. You can DIY a cleansing spritz by mixing apple cider vinegar with distilled water and adding a few drops of peppermint oil to soothe sensitive scalps, or tea tree oil for its anti-fungal properties.
  5. Co-Washing Weekly: If you work out frequently, you might need to cleanse your hair more often. Using a co-wash shampoo that doesn’t strip your hair of its essential oils is a great option for keeping your hair healthy and moisturized.

If you often wear your natural hair straight, it is easy to style it to the gym. However, a study conducted showed, “Having a straightened hair texture may not be ‘exercise friendly’ and may have both conscious and unconscious effects on the decision to avoid exercise”.

Therefore having straight hair might not be the best alternative to wearing your during workouts. Experiment with your natural hair, using these tips above.
