In the context of skincare or beauty products, A “Dupe” refers to a product that is considered to be less expensive more like an available alternative.
WHO STARTED DUPE?
Back in 2022 the dupe trend gained so much popularity in social media platforms, for example; TikTok was the main source then it slowly grew into other social platforms.
In the early 2000’s beauty sphere, “dupe” was short for duplicate. It was mainly used when referring to cheaper item, often drugstore versions of luxury cosmetics.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DUPES AND COUNTERFEIT?
Dupes are products intentionally created to resemble or replicate the features of another, often more expensive, product. However, dupes are legitimate products that openly acknowledge their inspiration from another company’s product.
While on the other hand, Counterfeit are fake or unauthorized replicas that may infringe on copyrights. They are products made to deceive consumers and the main purpose is to copy and emulate a popular brand.
